Blackdowns Early Music Projects

All Saints' Church, Culmstock

7.30pm - 9.00pm

Newe Vialles are delighted to be returning to Culmstock for a recital of characterful and quirky music from 17th century England. The programme features sumptuous lyra viol music by the soldier turned composer Tobias Hume, swift divisions by the master of English viol-playing Christopher Simpson, and delicate dance duos by John Jenkins, whose career spanned almost the whole of the century, from the time of Charles I until well into the Restoration. We are delighted that this time, Catherine Bass will join us for a set of lute and continuo songs, and we will end the recital with a sonata by Benjamin Hely, a little-known English composer and violist from the end of the century, whose music shows definite hints of the high baroque. This will be our first public performance since the beginning of the pandemic and we hope that, as Hume titles one of his pieces, things will soon indeed be “good againe”. The BEMP Third Thursday series of concerts is being promoted in partnership with the Friends of All Saints’ Church, Culmstock. The concerts will support two great causes, the continued livelihoods of the brilliant musicians invited to perform in the delightful acoustic of All Saints’, and after professional costs are met, the majority of remaining proceeds will be donated toward the development and improvement of the church for wider community access.

£15 (students £7.50, u12 free with ticket), from or follow links from webpage. 10% discount if booking for 3 or more Third Thursday events in one transaction.
