C17 Spanish songs with baroque guitar and lute
Old Theatre Royal, Bath (the Masonic Hall)
1.00pm - 1.50pm
400 years after the birth of Jose Marin - defrocked priest, convicted murderer, prolific composer of charming songs to the guitar - Musicke in the Ayre bring a programme of some of his songs together with pieces from other 17th century Spanish composers such as Hidalgo, Duron, Araniez and Escalada. To perform it, lutenist Din Ghani will be accompanying (on baroque guitar and lute) the Mexican soprano Fernanda Sánchez Rojo, who will be flying in from Barcelona specially for this. With a native speaker singing these unmistakeably Spanish songs with their catchy Iberian rhythms, this promises to be a delicious Saturday lunchtime treat!
This is also Musicke in the Ayre's first appearance at the Old Theatre Royal, just round the corner from SouthGate shopping centre, tucked in behind M&S - very close to parking, shops and restaurants - an ideal venue for this intimate music.
